Professor Elinor Ostrom died of cancer on June 6, 2012 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital aged 78. She was the first and only woman to win the Nobel Prize in Economics for her groundbreaking research on the ways that people organize themselves to manage resources.
Elinor Ostrom (1933-2012) was born in California during the depths of the Great Depression. Her parents were artistically inclined—her father a set designer and her mother a musician—and neither had graduated from college.


Few political theorists have read Elinor Ostrom’s Governing the Commons or incorporated its insights into their work. At first glance, it may seem to be of interest only to social scientists, with little relevance to purely normative political theory. On the contrary, Ostrom’s work in fact shows a kind of presumptuousness in moral theory.
